UMOM
The Brothers of
Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. at Arizona
State University are committed in giving back to
our local community. Each semester the Brothers
volunteer, on Tuesday nights to read books and work
with kids on arts and crafts projects at the UMOM
Day Center. The UMOM Day Center is a shelter for
women who come from an abusive environment and have
nowhere to go. The women who come here with their
kids receive assistants to get back on their feet
and live a normal life.
Omega
Head Start
The Omega Head Start is a program
where an organization can adopt a classroom of underprivileged
children to assist in any way possible. For the
last four years, the Brothers of Lambda Theta Phi
in conjunction with other Greek letter organizations
have adopted two classrooms at Lowell Elementary
School located in South Phoenix. Each December,
we purchase gifts and have a social mixer with participating
organizations to wrap up the gifts. The next morning,
we go and distribute the gifts to the kids as well
as enjoy a half-day of reading, arts and crafts,
and lunchtime. It is a very rewarding experience
knowing that what we do each December is all that
most of the kids in the program receive.
Dia de los Muertos
The Brothers of Lambda Theta
Phi have participated in the Dia De Los Muertos
event. Each year the Anthropology department showcases
alters celebrating the life of those loved ones
that have passed away. We assisted with setting
up the event. In addition, we also supervised the
arts and crafts table for the kids. This event is
a very cultural event with live music, great food,
and very entertaining.
Cesar Chavez
This was an event that the Brothers
of Lambda Theta Phi participated in. We went to
a Roosevelt Elementary School where surrounding
members of the community also attended and participated.
This event showcased dancing, facilitated discussions
about the Latino community, a small protest walk
entitled "Si Se Puede" and included arts
and crafts by the kids
Unity Jam
Ten minority Greek-letter organizations
came together for one night of unity, fun, and charity.
For the first time on our campus, organizations
from various councils came together and planned
a social event that guaranteed the privilege of
unity and civil duty. Together, we were able to
donate $1,135 to help the McDowell Healthcare Center
in continuing their excellent work in the care,
treatment, and research of patients who carry the
HIV/AIDS disease.
Walk As One
This past spring, the Brothers
of Lambda Theta Phi participated in the "Walk
as One" walk a thon to promote culture and
diversity. This was also an effort to raise money
for a charitable cause and to continue to educate.
Taste of Culture
In conjunction
with the Sisters of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority,
Inc. both organizations have teamed up to educate
the community and promote cultural awareness. We
host seven tables representing seven different cultures.
The tables have display boards with facts and history
representing that particular culture. In addition,
they also have art, music, and other artifacts that
represents the respective culture. This will be
the third year that the event has been put together.
