Notes and limitations: This report details the grants awarded by the 20 Arizona grantmakers with the highest amounts of cash grants. Detail on each grant was entered manually from each grantmakers’ form 990; in some cases, the organization provided us an electronic copy of their 990 grants schedule. For the purposes of this analysis, the following were removed from grant totals: in-kind (noncash) grants, payments that appeared to be contracts or fees-for-services, and payments to same-named affiliates or foundations.
The analysis of grant funding by Arizona county is based on recipient organizations’ addresses. An organization’s address does not always directly correspond to the counties for which it provides services; this is especially true for some of the organizations located in Maricopa county, several of which provide services in other parts of Arizona. Similarly, the analysis of grant funding by organization type is based on the recipient organization’s main NTEE code, however, many nonprofit organizations provide services across many different service types. This analysis does not include cash grants awarded by out-of-state foundations to organizations in Arizona, a few of which provide significant grant dollars to Arizona-based organizations. This report utilized our Grantmakers database and our Arizona Nonprofits database, both of which incorporate data obtained from the National Center for Charitable Statistics and Guidestar.
