My characters are not really characters. What I leave out about the 'characters' is as important as what I put in.  I hint at their histories, thoughts, attitudes. They are agents and receptors: events happen to them and they make events happen. But I do not paint in the total picture. My characters are neither substance nor surface. Rather they are permeable, osmotic---events pass over and through them.
