Gina Valdés, translated by Katherine King and Gina Valdés

Using the seemingly simple copla, a traditional Spanish verse form that harks back to the Middle Ages and arises from the popular oral tradition, Gina Valdés explores the barriers between people and countries, whether those barriers are legal and physical, the border between the United States and Mexico, or personal, between lovers and friends. Her voice combines the feminist demand for power and expression with the social critic's demand for justice. This volume is a revised edition of her earlier work of the same title, previously available only in Spanish. In facing-page English translation.

Gina Valdés was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. She received a B.A. in creative writing and an M.A. in Spanish literature from the University of California, San Diego, and has taught Chicano literature and culture and bilingual creative writing at universities throughout the United States. She has published a bilingual book of poetry, Comiendo lumbre Eating Fire (Maize Press, 1986), and the original Spanish edition of Puentes y fronteras (Castle Graphics, 1982). Her poetry and fiction have also been published in journals and anthologies in the United States, Mexico, and Europe.
