Alurista
A poet
with a strong commitment to social problems, Alurista continues
to explore racism and bigotry in his newest collection of poetry.
These poems are angry, full of energy; they call us to action. Like
the poems of e.e. cummings, Alurista's work is at once simple and
highly complex. He frequently begins a poem with a playful tone,
but then expands it to shed light on some of the most important
issues of our time. About half of the poems in this collection are
in Spanish and the rest in English.
Alurista,
recognized as one of the most significant Chicano poets, was born
in Mexico City and migrated to San Diego, California, when he was
thirteen. He holds a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University
of California, San Diego. Among his other collections of poetry
are Z Eros
(1995), Return: Poems Collected and New
(1982), Spik in Glyph? (1981),
and Floricanto en Aztlán
(1971).
