Announcements:

AOL may have been making plans to buy Red Hat. They have denied these claims
A security hole in CDE can cause a buffer overflow to allow root access
The personal information manager Evolution has a plugin to allow users to interface with Exchange server.
Sun has released Solaris 9 "Early Access" to allow the user community to do testing
Security Websites and Listserves have been added to the UNUG website thanks to Nina Barr
SGI has come out with a new workstation called the Fuel
New G4 1GHz Duel processor computers are available from Apple

 

New tools:

demarc - "an all-inclusive network monitoring solution that allows you to monitor an entire network of servers from one powerful web interface. "

 

Discussion topics:

It was suggested that useful snippets of code be compiled into a code base and placed on the UNUG website.
Questions arose about people's ability to create open source code based on the rules stipulated by the Arizona Board of Regents. It may be appropriate to contact legal at some point to discuss this topic

In the next couple of weeks another planning meeting will occur to come up with an outline for the training sessions.

The first few training sessions will deal primarily with initial setup and configuration of a UNIX server as well as brining up services securely.
