:LIKE ESCAPE FROM HUNGARY

We live in a world that is not
our own. And hard it is
in spite of blazoned days.
--Wallace Stevens

Scars of look-
ing for dan-
ger from one
direction,
solid waste--

shocking piles
of carnage, leaves
in plastic,
discarded cans,
excessive

wrapping, gags,
cultural
(critical)
bulimi-
a, choking

rivers, child-
ren, anxious
men feeling
like women
without con-

trol, world al-
most singing
the pain held
at such high
strain so long:

a boilous
limbo, ges-
tation, singed
wisdom -- the
need for verbs.
