elements as snow; clouds; the girl’s thoughts; her nose, mouth, eyes; her excitement.
Letters of the word travel upward through her body on seven paths. The proliferation
of o’s illustrative possibilities suggests Proust’s dilemma “. . . and now remembrance
advances from the small to smallest details, from the smallest to the infinitesimal,
while that which it encounters in these microcosms grows ever mightier. Such is
