At the school groups self-regimented  and you were not allowed to move from one group to another.  This is absolute segregation. No intermingling. To speak to someone in another group is to invite a mockery so intense that it may be necessary to leave.

I said why don't you ask one of the guys to carry your cello and she said "they'll say she can't even carry her cello let alone play it."
