Friday, April 30, 1999

10:30 a. m. - 12:00 noon

Memorial Union, Rm 223, La Paz

Dr. Paredes Scribner's presentation will share the findings of a 3-year research and development project examining exemplary public schools with large populations of Hispanic, Limited English speaking students along the Texas/Mexico border region between Brownsville and Laredo, Texas.

The findings of this important study have been reported in a recently published book by Teachers College Press, Lessons Learned from High-Performing Hispanic Schools: Creating Learning Communities. Dr. Paredes Scribner co-edited and contributed two chapters to this important work. Her presentation will include an overview of the research questions and strategies that guided the research, and a delineation of significant findings.

Participants can expect to learn about successful approaches for transforming low socioeconomic, linguistically diverse schools into high-performing learning environments where adults, as well as students, are continually learning how to learn together in ways that insure success for all.
