Why are women of Mexican descent at such high risk for late stage diagnosis? |
|
The incidence rate of breast cancer is low in women of Mexican descent, yet the mortality rate is very high. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in Latinas (Borrayo 599 & 812, Heilman & Table 31). source:www.muybueno.net Breast cancer is a specific risk in women of Mexican descent because they are at higher risk for late stage diagnosis (Borrayo 599 & 812). Women of Mexican descent are at "higher risk for late stage diagnosis" of breast cancer because of their "underutilization of screening techniques, such as the breast self exam, clinical breast exam, mammography,Ħħ (Borrayo 599 & 812, Carpenter 217, Garbers CR 629).
Late stage diagnosis is a result of the underutilization or lack of screening procedures; the breast self exam, clinical breast exam, and mammography. Women of Mexican descent are in fact the least likely U.S. Latina subgroup to undergo cancer screening, this then places them at higher risk for late stage diagnosis of breast cancer.
