The ASU Lodestar Center is seeking emerging nonprofit leaders who have:

  • A desire to commit time and talent helping nonprofits become world-class institutions

The Generation Next Leadership Academy is a cohort of the Valley’s top emerging nonprofit leaders, selected through a competitive process, to participate in a program that provides them the knowledge and tools needed to take on leadership roles within the nonprofit community. This 9-month program is comprised of best practice approaches to leading and managing nonprofits, from renowned professors and practitioner instructors at ASU as well as established nonprofit leaders from organizations that engage with the ASU Lodestar Center.

Lodestar Foundation announces $250,000 Collaboration Prize

The Collaboration Prize is offering $250,000 to recognize collaborations among two or more nonprofit organizations that each would otherwise provide the same or similar programs or services and compete for clients, financial resources and staff. The Prize was created and is currently funded by The Lodestar Foundation, in collaboration with members of the Arizona-Indiana-Michigan (AIM) Alliance, a partnership that brings together The Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and the Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University (Michigan).

This class covers the design and implementation of a results oriented program evaluation system that produces valid, credible and useful information.

Laws and Legal Issues Affecting Nonprofit Organizations (NMI 110)

Learn about the legal framework under which tax-exempt organizations operate and are regulated including a discussion of the oversight responsibilities of the Internal Revenue Service and various state agencies as they relate to the nonprofit sector and tax-exempt organizations. Explore legal rights and fiduciary obligations of directors, trustees, officers and members of nonprofit organizations including a discussion of conflicts of interest, private inurement, private benefit, excess benefit and self-dealing transactions. Be apprised of legal and tax implications related to fundraising, charitable giving, political activities and commercial activities of tax-exempt organizations.

The Press, Power, & Politics (NMI 116)
August 8 – 9, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday

This course develops the knowledge and skills for nonprofit cause centered advocacy, how to build a campaign, mobile citizens/constituents for effective action, how to organize public messaging, and provides some idea and skills for how nonprofits can make their "message" known to external groups and provides techniques for practitioners to use when working with elected officials and media. It will cover the basic legal requirements for lobbying as well as provide simple techniques for communicating effectively to outside groups. Guest lecturers will provide real world suggestions on how to work with external constituencies and students will practice these techniques in mock-scenarios.

Effective Supervision (NMI 104)
August 15 - 16, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday

New supervisors and those seeking enhancement of supervisory effectiveness will gain insight on being an effective supervisor based on self-assessment and practical skill development. McCarthy Heart Hats accepting grant applications

McCarthy Heart Hats, the community involvement arm of McCarthy Southwest Region, is seeking nonprofit applicants to benefit from its annual golf tournament proceeds. In past years the golf tournament has raised up to $50,000. The golf tournament will be held in December 2008, with the grant to be awarded soon thereafter. Seeking ways to put this money to good use in the community and are inviting 501(C)3 nonprofit organizations located in Maricopa County to apply for the funds. More than one organization may be selected as a recipient.

This year’s tournament proceeds will be dedicated to nonprofits that support children and families experiencing dramatic economic need; and organizations that benefit active duty military, veterans and their families. Please carefully consider how your organization benefits these focus areas as you complete your application.

If your nonprofit organization would like to be considered, please answer the following questions and mail or deliver to the following address for receipt no later than July 18th. Please limit your response to the questions below on no more than two 8 ½ x 11-inch pages. No supplemental materials or cover letters will be accepted. The applications will be reviewed by a committee of McCarthy volunteers. All applicants will be notified of the grant recipient via the email address provided on the application. A selection is anticipated by the end of August or beginning of September.

Compass Behavioral Health Care announces opening of nominations for the 13th annual Dynamic Duo Awards

Compass Behavioral Health Care is pleased to announce that nominations are open for the 13th Annual Dynamic Duo Awards, which will be held on September 21, 2008 at the Tucson Convention Center. A Dynamic Duo is "a pair of people, who, working together, have done something which makes our community a better place to live. " A special "Don and June Jorgensen Award" will be given to a duo working in the field of addictions. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. on July 14, 2008. The nominees will be honored at the 13th Annual Dynamic Duo Awards Gala on September 21, 2008 at the Tucson Convention Center. TechSoup.org offers free and discounted technology donations to nonprofit organizations

TechSoup.org offers nonprofits a one-stop resource for technology needs by providing free information, resources, and support. TechSoup offers a variety of information and services for the benefit of the nonprofit sector. Ward 1 Youth Funders accepting proposals to donate $25,000 for the empowerment of youth through culture, heritage, and the arts (Tucson)
In partnership with Every Voice in Action Foundation, Council Member Regina Romero (Tucson City Ward 1) has created a new youth philanthropy program for young people living in Tucson's Ward 1. The Ward 1 Youth Funders committee (comprised of 15 high school and college-aged youth) has been asked by Council Member Romero to decide how City of Tucson Ward 1 will spend $25,000 of its Youth Services funding to support Nature, Arts, Culture and/or Heritage programs for Ward 1 youth. After extensive discussions, the Ward 1 Youth Funders group has decided to focus its grant round specifically on programs that empower youth and support them in exploring culture and heritage through the arts. Please note that programs must serve youth in Tucson's Ward 1 to be eligible for this funding opportunity. The Youth Funders group will review all proposals submitted in response to this RFP and make final funding decisions by early August. Announcing the availability of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) funding in Cochise, Greenlee, Graham, and Santa Cruz counties

The Arizona State Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) announces the availability of Federal grant funds to support a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Cochise, Greenlee, Graham and Santa Cruz Counties. RSVP is authorized by The Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973, as Amended, (Title 42 U.S. Code, and Chapter 26). In accordance with the National and Community Service Trust Act, the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, manages the RSVP program. The Corporation for National Service provides grants to qualified agencies and organizations for the dual purpose of engaging persons 55 and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs, and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of volunteers. Approximately $58,200 per year is now available in federal funds to support 116 volunteers.

Non-federal share requirements (cash or in-kind) are as follows: First year-minimum of 10% of the total grant budget. Second year-20% of total grant budget. Third year and thereafter-30% of total grant budget.

To determine if this program is consistent with your organization’s interests and capabilities as a potential sponsor, all interested parties are invited to participate in an informational teleconference on Tuesday July 8th , 2008 at 2:00 p.m. To reserve your teleconference line, please contact Terry Gunnell, Arizona State Program Director tgunnell@cns.gov by Monday, July 7th, 2008.

Participation in the call is optional for prospective applicant as all pertinent information required to complete the application is attached to this e-mail. The call is intended to review application information, program and fiscal requirements, and answer applicant questions.

Institute of Supporting Children and Families of Guard and Reserve - The Military Child Education Coalition, and Arizona Operation: Military Kids
Sept. 11-12, 2008 (Tucson)

The Military Child Education Coalition’s “Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserve Institute” is a professional development program for educators and professionals to reach out in a support network to the children and families of the National Guard and Reserve. The conference includes two continental breakfasts, two lunches, two breaks with refreshments, and conference materials (no registration, meal, or resource material cost to participants). The curriculum, content, process, and delivery are correlated with the National Staff Development Council’s standards, and the National Standards for School Counseling Programs. Because the Institute is very interactive, and participation is required to fully benefit from this training, participants must commit to attend both days. This event is funded by U.S. FMWRC-CYS.

Evidence-Based Child & Teen Mental Health: The First National Institute for Primary Care Providers - ASU College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation, and the ASU School of Social Work

The ASU College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation and the ASU School of Social Work have teamed up to sponsor the "Evidence-Based Child & Teen Mental Health: The First National Institute for Primary Care Providers" three-day Workshop and Conference, held at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona, from October 8 through 10. This seminar will focus on mental health issues affecting teens in society today.

The Education programs division provides direct grants, provides counsel to high net-worth individuals for their education grant-making, convenes leaders (foundation, nonprofit, education, government, etc.) to advance education reform, and advances public policy efforts to support education reform. This position is responsible for: maintaining excellent communication with all areas of ACF Educational activities; meeting deadlines for reports, grants, and presentations; and meticulous attention to detail.   • Licensed by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners as a Substance Abuse Counselor, Professional Counselor, or Social Worker (LISAC, LPC or LCSW).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s Patient Placement Criteria.
  • Possess a background in the delivery of individual/group/family counseling services, with a chemical dependency population.
  • Experience in office administration, supervision, and records management in a medical/clinical setting.
  • Experience in working with Native Americans is desirable.
  • History of successful business development and operations experience.

  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Experience with RHBA systems and/or managed care is preferred.

Retention Specialist - Arizona College Scholarship Foundation (Phoenix)

Description: The Retention Specialist’s essential duties are as follows:

  • Coach and advise student scholars on academic, personal, and career related topics to ensure retention with colleges/universities.
  • Maintain regular in-person, phone, and e-mail communication with student scholars.
  • Serve as ACSF liaison to college/university mentors.
  • Implement recruitment processes, including scholarship presentations, application tracking, interviews, and selection.
  • Work with the ACSF staff in the planning and coordination of annual training and social events, including the New Scholars Orientation & Reception, and the Leadership Symposium.
  • Track student scholar progress through on-line database management.
  • Manage document collection, and maintain student scholar files.

ESL Teacher - ASSE International Student Exchange Program (Phoenix)

Description: The American Scandinavian Student Exchange (ASSE) needs an ESL teacher to facilitate ASSE's International High School Summer Exchange Program. This is a four-week, hands-on, cultural enrichment program for international exchange high school students. The program runs from July 24, 2008 to August 24, 2008. Monday - Friday (5 hours per day). This is a contract service position offering - $3,000.00.

Job Description:

  • Assists in identifying potential host families.
  • Plans curriculum and timetable of minimum 20 hours per week / 5 hours per day.
  • Liaises with the Program Coordinator regarding recommending textbooks or workbooks, if any.
  • Administers two SLEP tests for LCE Program, one at the beginning of the course and one at the conclusion; or one SLEP test for CCE program. Tabulates scores and submits answer sheets to ASSE.
  • Reports to Program Coordinator any student and/or host family issues or concerns.
  • Accompanies students on excisions, activities, and group social events where possible, to incorporate experiences into the formal course.
  • Assists Program Coordinator in integrating students into the host community, and with local teenagers.
  • Assists Program Coordinator with the implementation of program.
  • Represents best interest of ASSE in all dealings with their communities, host families, and students.
  • Must be able to provide proof of teacher and ESL certification before hire.
