6th Annual Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management is pleased to announce that the 6th Annual Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness will be held March 5, 2004 at at the Sheraton Phoenix East (Mesa). The Annual Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness, held on the first Friday of March each year, is designed to stimulate thought about best practices in nonprofit leadership and organizational effectiveness as well as provide affordable access to the latest and most innovative thinking on core issues.

This year's Forum, entitled Building the Capacity of Arizona's Nonprofit Sector: Resources and Opportunities, will highlight existing resources and emerging efforts to build the capacity of Arizona nonprofit leaders, organizations and the sector as a whole. Featured speakers include Audrey Alvarado, Executive Director, National Council of Nonprofit Associations and Sherry Salway Black, Senior Vice President, First Nations Development Institute. Practitioner in Residence Fellowship Available

The ASU Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management seeks qualified candidates for the Practitioner in Residence (P.I.R.) Fellowship. The P.I.R. Fellowship involves the appointment of an outstanding and proven senior level volunteer or executive with nonprofit sector experience who becomes involved in work of the Center during the academic year. The P.I.R. provides a practitioner perspective as decisions are made and activities of the Center evolve.

The P.I.R. involves an annual appointment from September 1 through May 31 each year. A minimum of one day a week service is considered on behalf of the Center (approximately 8 - 10 hours per week). A selection committee will review nominations and applications during the Spring semester and make its recommendation to the Center Director by June 30, 2004. Funding Available for East Valley Children's Programs

The Tribune is pleased to open the RFP process for their 1st Annual Our Children Matter holiday fundraising campaign. Any agency serving East Valley children is welcome to apply. Capacity Building Grants Available in Yavapai County

Yavapai County Community Foundation is seeking applications from organizations serving Yavapai County for its Spring 2004 grantmaking cycle, which will focus on Capacity Building grants (municipalities and schools are not eligible for this grant cycle). Sedona organizations are requested to apply through the Greater Sedona Community Foundation. Grants will be offered up to $3,500 to either enhance or add technology or for organizational effectiveness. "Technology Support" will be limited to: Computer, software, fax, copier, telephone upgrades. "Organizational effectiveness" will be limited to: strategic planning; board, volunteer, or staff training; development of a fundraising or marketing plan. Applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004 (no exceptions and no hand deliveries). Applicants will be notified of YCCF's decision in April with distribution checks to follow in three weeks. Southern Arizona Capacity Building Program

United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona announces its new Capacity Building Program, funded, in part, by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose of the Supporting Seniors federal program is to assist faith-based and community organizations and associations that serve or wish to serve senior citizens and their unpaid, informal caregivers in Pima County, Arizona to increase their effectiveness, enhance their ability to provide social services, expand their organizations or associations, diversify their funding sources and create collaborations to better serve senior citizens or engage seniors in meaningful volunteer activity. United Way will provide training, technical assistance and grants to qualifying organizations and associations. Assistance will be provided at no cost to recipient organizations and associations and will be on an ongoing basis. Grants are to be for capacity enhancement purposes only and may not be used for direct services.

The Request for Proposals packet and Applications for Training and Technical Assistance will be available January 16, 2004; on the United Way website www.unitedwaytucson.org, at United Way Offices, 330 N. Nonprofit Enrichment Series - "Marketing: Connecting With Your Clients and Community"

The fourth of seven segments included in the Nonprofit Enrichment Series, offered by the Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management. This three-hour seminar contains a video lecture presentation on the topic from a leading national expert and includes facilitated group discussion and exercises. Participants will:

  • Learn cost-effective ways to listen to and learn about your clients and community, and to translate that information into better marketing decisions

It will cover the legal requirements for lobbying as well as provide simple techniques for communicating effectively to outside groups.     "The Basics of Survey Research"

    An introduction to the world of survey research. This workshop will cover the basic components of conducting valid, reliable survey research. The focus is on telephone survey research, but a discussion of mail, Internet and person-to-person surveys will be included in the discussion. Topics covered in this workshop include formulating a survey research project, defining the population to be surveyed, drawing a scientific sample of respondents to be surveyed, developing survey questions, fielding the research, collecting data, analyzing information, and presenting results. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have the tools to conduct basic survey research projects for their agencies or organizations.     "Conducting Successful Needs Assessments"

    This workshop is designed to help non-profit organizations, government, state and local agencies, human service providers, researchers, grant writers, and program managers learn to assess the need for services within specific program areas. This workshop will also explore how to conduct community assessments involving an evaluation of demographics, values, opinions and programmatic needs for any community in the United States. The workshop will cover the use of secondary data sources including the 2000 Census, American Community Survey and Census Supplemental Information. The workshop will also cover the process of conducting needs assessments using primary data collection tools such as telephone surveys, mail surveys, focus groups and interviewing techniques. These techniques generate information for examining the values, preferences, interests, and opinions, and needs of specific groups of people.     "Evaluating Programs and Measuring Outcomes"

    Workshop will cover the use of evaluation information, as well as topics needed to understand and interpret program outcomes, including working with logic models, addressing issues of implementation, defining goals and objectives, and developing measures of your success. Do you need to know how your programs benefit participants? Are they having the impact you want them to? How can you show that you are making a difference? What happens to participants after they receive your services? This workshop will provide you with the information you need to construct useful goals, objectives and outcome measures for programs and initiatives. In this workshop, you will learn how to develop and assess process and outcome measures, and you will develop a basic understanding of design issues associated with program evaluation. This information will enable you to demonstrate success to funders and potential funders, and get valuable information that can make your programs work better. The workshop will combine lecture with workshop activities in order to provide participants with the information they need as well as allow them to interact with the material. Participants should come to the workshop with a particular program or initiative in mind, as each person will use the information learned to complete exercises using a programs they work with or a program they would like to initiate.     Children's Program Consultant - Unlimited Potential

    Unlimited Potential is a grassroots non-profit agency which has operated educational programs in south Phoenix since 1986. We work closely with Head Start and other community-based agencies. Our programs include: educational programs for low-income women to help them gain English, literacy, and life skills; an early childhood program for their children (6 mo-5 years) to help them gain socialization, language, and preschool skills; social services; and workshops and family events. Three of the four people involved in this project got their GEDs and learned English within the program.

    The Children's Program Consultant will develop written lesson plans for Unlimited Potential's 36-week early childhood program and implement and assist program teachers in a continuing education plan. This is a contract position and does not include benefits. Required knowledge and skills include: Bachelor's degree in early childhood education; experience in writing lesson plans; Knowledge of course work for Child Development Associate (CDA) and Early Childhood Certificate; Fluency in Spanish or assistance of a bilingual aide to work with staff; Experience with Unlimited Potential, Head Start or other preschool programs. Salary: $950/month. Length of employment and time commitment TBD (tentatively Jan -Dec, '04; 10 hrs/wk incl. Fridays and one other morning (8-12 AM). Evaluation after 1st, 3rd, and 6th months by director. Evaluation can lead to cancellation of contract if work is unacceptable.
