Pogonomyrmex sylvestris-group
Workers of the P. sylvestris-group
can be recognized by the following characters: (1) long acuminate spine on antero- or medioventral margin of
peduncle, (2) in dorsal view, postpetiole triangular,
longer than wide, (3) superior and inferior propodeal
spines long, (4) in dorsal view, petiole elongate; in lateral view, petiole flattened
with a crest at anterior margin that is elevated above posterior face, (5) eyes
small, situated anterior to middle of head, (6) psammophore
weakly developed, consisting of numerous short hairs on ventral side of head, and
(7) mesosoma with at least several long flexuous hairs. Queens are unknown for all three species; males
are known for only P. stefani.
