Pogonomyrmex laticeps-group
Workers of the P. laticeps-group can be recognized by
the following characters: (1) first gastric tergite
smooth and shining to moderately coriarious, but
lacking fine, dense longitudinal striae, (2) head wider
than long, (3) interrugal spaces on dorsum of mesosoma smooth
to moderately coriarious, sub-shining to shining
(punctuation or granulation lacking), and (4) superior propodeal
spines well developed, inferior propodeal spines
poorly developed or lacking.
Morphological characters do not separate out these three species as well
as those for some other species groups.
The smooth interrugal spaces seem to be the
most distinct character to diagnose P. laticeps-group species.
