The Astonishing Story of the Saint of Cabora is a fictional re-creation of the life of Teresa Urrea, a popular Mexican heroine at the turn of the century. In her teens she began to manifest miraculous healing powers. Her fame spread among the ill and the disheartened, and thousands made the pilgrimage to see her. Teresa's sense of justice and her sympathy for the poor and oppressed drew her into political intrigue against the dictator Porfirio Díaz. Exiled to the United States, she continued to heal and inspire until her untimely death.

Brianda Domecq was born in New York but has lived most of her life in Mexico. In 1978 she was kidnapped and held captive for eleven days. Out of this experience she fashioned her first novel, Once días . . . y algo más (1979, published in English as Eleven Days). Other books include Bestiario doméstico (short stories, 1983), Acechando al unicornio: la virginidad en la literatura mexicana (nonfiction anthology, 1989), and Voces y rostros del Bravo (nonfiction, 1987).
