UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation: Grants Available for Uncovered Healthcare Needs
Deadline: open (posted May 12, 2008)
These new grants provided by the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation will provide assistance to cover the costs of critical healthcare treatment, services, or equipment which are not fully covered by health insurance. Speech, physical, and occupational therapy are common needs, as are prescriptions, eyeglasses, wheelchairs, and orthotics. For complete details visit: http://www.uhccf.org/.
Social Equity Venture Fund: Invites Entries for Film Competition
Deadline: September 15, 2008
Social Equity Venture Fund is accepting entries for Cinma Prosprit, a film competition designed to showcase successful models of enterprise-based development work. Amateur and professional filmmakers from around the world are encouraged to submit short films (two to five minutes in length) telling stories about real people working to end poverty through enterprise-based solutions. Videos should be suitable to be posted online in forums such as MySpace TV and YouTube. The videos should use the best film techniques to showcase the story of an entrepreneur to show the story of what odds this person has overcome, what impact they have had on the world, and how they have managed to achieve their goals. Profiled entrepreneurs should be engaging in for-profit, sustainable, and ethical business practices. For more information:

Tucson Electric Power and Unisource Energy Services are accepting applications from charitable, nonprofit organizations in the companies' Arizona service areas. Through their "Grants That Make a Difference" program, TEP and UES are making a combined total of $145,000 available to nonprofit organizations that help people afflicted by homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, child abuse, and other social problems. The program is designed to encourage cooperation among charitable groups to help make the most of limited philanthropic resources. Grant applications will be reviewed by volunteer committees and scored based on various criteria, including, agency collaboration to enhance service delivery, opportunity to leverage volunteers or other funds, and effectiveness in responding to critical social service needs. Colombe Foundation: Support for Peace Advocacy

The Colombe Foundation seeks to create a peaceful world through changes in American policy. The Foundation works for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and to shift from policies of war and aggression to policies that embrace conflict prevention and conflict resolution. The Foundation attempts to shift the nation from wasteful military spending to investments in programs that address poverty, environmental degradation, and other root causes of violence. The foundation currently offers grants to grassroots organizations in the United States that share its mission while working to educate the public and influence decision makers in advocating for peace and alternative policies. Donald Terner Prize for Innovation and Leadership in Affordable Housing: Applications Invited
Deadline: August 18, 2008
A biennial award, the I. Donald Terner Prize recognizes successful and innovative affordable housing projects and their leadership teams. The prize is administered by the Center for Community Innovation at the University of California, Berkeley. Judges will consider: design and construction quality; number of affordable housing units produced; income-levels and social needs served by the projects; positive impact on the lives of residents and the community; and innovation (e.g. mix of income levels, creative financing techniques, partnership arrangements, use of density to increase project impact and affordability, mix of land uses). An application may be submitted by anyone involved in the planning, development, or operation of a project but must include the approval of the original project sponsor, developer, and the architect. To be eligible, projects must be located in the United States and have been in operation for a sufficient amount of time to

Nestle Very Best in Youth Program: Honoring Young People for Academic and Community Service
Deadline: November 20, 2008
The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program, sponsored by Nestlé USA, honors young people (ages 13 to 18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. The young people, selected through nominations from volunteers, parents, and teachers, will be featured in a special publication and honored at a black-tie ceremony in Los Angeles in July 2009. Rio Tinto Alcan Prize for Sustainability: Open for Entries
Deadline: September 12, 2008
The $1 million prize is open to all not-for-profit, nongovernmental, and civil society organizations based anywhere in the world that are working to advance the goals of economic, environmental, and social sustainability. The prize was created to recognize the not-for-profit sector for its contributions to global sustainability in communities and its work in influencing policy. In addition, nine grants worth $15,000 each will be awarded to short-listed NGOs to invest in one of the following three approved courses: (1) The postgraduate certificate in cross-sector partnership at Cambridge University; (2) The LEAD Fellows training program; 3) The postgraduate certificate in sustainable development from the University of London. Open Meadows Foundation: Funding Projects for Women and Girls
Deadline: August 15, 2008
The Open Meadows Foundation is a grant-making organization for projects led by women and girls and benefiting them. Open Meadows funds projects that do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, or ability. The foundation offers grants of up to $2,000 each for projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; which reflect the diversity of the community served by the project, promote community power, as well as racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. The applicants must have limited access to financial resources or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding to be considered. Organizational budgets should not exceed $150,000. United Negro College Fund
UNCF is the nation's oldest and most successful minority
higher education assistance organization, the United
Negro College Fund's mission is to provide financial
support to its 39 member institutions and increase
minority degree attainment by reducing financial barriers
to college. UNCF institutions and other historically
black colleges and universities are highly effective,
awarding 25 percent of African American baccalaureate
degrees. UNCF administers more than 400 programs,
including scholarship, internship and fellowship programs,
mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty

The Hispanic College Fund
The Hispanic College Fund is a private non-profit
organization dedicated to developing the next generation

Opportunities for Hispanic Students
- The Hispanic
Association of Colleges and Universities
(HACU) and Laureate
have come together to establish one of the largest
international scholarship programs dedicated to
encouraging US Hispanic students to participate
in study abroad programs.
- The program offers study abroad
tuition scholarships that can be applied to more
than 20 campus locations within the Laureate International
University network. Schools are located in many
different countries in Europe
and Latin
America, including: Spain, France, Switzerland,
Costa Rica, Honduras, Chile, Panama, Peru, Ecuador
and Mexico.
- Depending on the study abroad location,
coursework takes place in English, Spanish, or French.
Together, Laureate schools offer a wide range of
courses in numerous academic areas.
- HACU member institutions in the

Paid Fellowship, Education and Employment Program
The National Womens Law Center is seeking a 2007 or 2008 law school graduate for a fellowship in its Education and Employment program, to begin in September 2008.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The fellow will focus on issues of educational equity, including enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in all aspects of federally funded education. Among the issues on which the fellow may focus are, issues of workplace fairness and equal pay, increasing gender equity in athletics, the high school drop out crisis, addressing sex segregation in career and technical education, eliminating barriers to women's opportunities in math and science, and fighting sexual harassment.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a 2007 or 2008 law school graduate with excellent research, written and oral communications skills. Possess proven initiative and follow-through, the ability to work quickly and well under pressure, and a commitment to gender equity in education. Experience in policy analysis or field organizing and/or quantitative skills preferred.
