César E. Chávez Leadership Institute

About Us

History

The César E. Chávez Leadership Institute (CECLI) was established in 1995 by a group of ASU and community leaders seeking to inspire and motivate high school students through the life and legacy of César E. Chávez. Under the direction of Mr. Frank Hidalgo, the goal of the Institute is to develop a cadre of youth prepared for leadership that will allow students to participate fully in the civic, economic and cultural life of their community.

Every summer, the CECLI hosts 50 high school students from across the state for a week-long program of leadership training on the ASU campus. The program provides students with an in-depth experience that will increase their understanding of higher education and community development.

Mission

The ASU César E. Chávez Leadership Institute recognizes the importance of increasing the number of Arizona youth attending institutions of higher learning and how social and economic pressures are intensified as students pursue their college education. To this end, the Institute gives high school students the means to explore their educational potential and leadership development skills.

The CECLI recruits sophomores and juniors from high schools throughout the state for a week-long meeting comprised of workshops and presentations that address community involvement, the political landscape, professional and business issues, and higher education.

Community leaders will make presentations as well as address issues and concerns identified by the students during open-forum discussions. Students will attend the program at no cost to their families.

Goals

  • Identify and develop leadership skills for Arizona youth.
  • Educate each participant of their importance to the growth and development of Arizona.
  • Encourage the pursuit of higher education as a vehicle for self-improvement and future leadership roles.
  • Strengthen participant’s knowledge of leadership – in theory and in practice.
  • Grow participant’s respect for self and others.
