Harold Schechter is a professor of American literature at Queens College, the City University of New York. His essays have appeared in various newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the International Herald Tribune. Of his more than two-dozen books, he is best known for his historical true crime accounts, most recently The Devil's Gentleman: Privilege, Poison, and the Trial That Ushered in the Twentieth Century (Random House/Ballantine, 2007). He is editor of the Library of America volume, True Crime: An American Anthology (2008).
