Teach for the Piper Writer's Studio

The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at ASU is looking for people interested in teaching writing classes in the community. The classes are non-credit and will be located around the Greater Phoenix area. Classes will be dependent on enrollment. All the classes will be held in the evenings or on weekends for the convenience of the students.

The format of the classes will be:

Eight-week class (meets once a week for two hours), or one-day class (meets Saturday from 11am-3pm) in poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir, playwriting/screenwriting. Other genres or specified workshops (such as Gay & Lesbian Writing, Writing for Senior Citizens, Romance Writing, Magazine Writing, Freelance Writing...) may be considered upon recommendation by applicants. We are interested in topics in which you have a personal interest or passion. We often are at our best as instructors when we are teaching what we love most.

We are leaving the structure of the classes up to the instructors. Some may wish to offer a traditional workshop experience, others may wish to try in-class writing exercises and other flexible formats. We are open to hearing ideas.

Payment varies depending on experience, history of teaching excellence and experience, and demonstrated success in publishing. We will work to schedule classes near your home or office.

Required qualifications:

  • Instructors of intensive courses must be distinguished teachers in their field of writing with several major publications or awards.
  • Instructors of beginning level courses must have experience teaching entry-level writing workshops in their genre and a demonstration of promise in publishing—typically a chapbook or comparable publication history.
  • Instructors of general/multi-level courses should have a strong background in teaching and at least two major publications (or comparable experience) in their genre of instruction.

Desired qualifications:

We prefer candidates who possess an MFA in Creative Writing or comparable education/experience in their field of instruction.

To be considered as an instructor, send us:

  • CV, resume or bio statement
  • letter of interest, plus two references
  • a 50-word bio statement (for marketing materials)
  • a 50-word description for each class topic you’re interested in offering (for marketing materials)
  • Once an instructor has signed a letter of agreement to teach, we’ll need a course description to show to potential students

If we choose to consider you for a workshop opportunity, we will likely ask you to submit a book/publication sample and letters of recommendation that speak to your expertise as a teacher.
