A Message from the Director

Since its founding in 2003, global fellowships have been a signature part of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Dozens of students in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Arizona State University have had the opportunity to experience the world from Mexico to Australia, from Europe to Canada, from India to China to Singapore. Student experiences have included research, writing, conference presentations, and teaching creative writing to high school, college, and community learners.

Given the generous funding of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, ASU MFA students are fully funded via a competitive application process. Most students have been privileged to have more than one global experience during the summer months following their first and second academic years. Depending upon the fellowship, students reside in a foreign country for two to six weeks. Students are prepared for their global fellowships via mentoring or a full course, and are encouraged to apply for global residences and fellowships post-graduation.

We are all citizens of the world. Through the Piper Global Fellowships, the aim is to inspire writers to create art that resonates beyond national boundaries and engages world perspectives.
