Library Student Advisory Committee

The Library Student Advisory Committee (LSAC) is a committee formed to open a channel of communication between students and Sherrie Schmidt, University Librarian. The library uses the committee to solicit advice from students in order to enhance library resources and services.

What it is:

The Library Student Advisory Committee meets once each semester in Hayden Library (with food provided!). Student members are asked to make at least a one-year commitment to serving on the committee. Students must be users of one or more libraries on the Tempe campus and/or they should be users of the library's online resources. Can't make one of the formal meetings? Don't worry, there are other opportunities to participate through such things as focus groups, online surveys and other library events.

What has been accomplished:

In the past two years the feedback given by LSAC members directly resulted in changes such as:

  • the availability of individual study rooms in both Hayden and Noble;
  • better signage in the elevators in Hayden;
  • additional software options on the computers in the libraries;
  • better direct promotion of library changes to students.

LSAC members have also had opportunities to participate in focus groups regarding space in the Noble Library and in usability studies for library web site enhancements. In addition an LSAC member had the opportunity to create a video commercial to promote RefWorks for students, which has since gotten attention nationwide.

How do you benefit?

How does serving on the Library Student Advisory Committee benefit you, the student? Serving on the committee will provide an opportunity to share with the administration concerns of highest priority to students; the chance to meet new friends; it will enhance your resume; and, of course, will provide two free meals a year.
