Date Due

There is no limit to the number of books ASU students, faculty or staff may check out. Materials from specialized collections such as videos, microforms and/or reserve may have limits. At the time of loan, the borrower will be notified of the due date for each item. The borrower is responsible for meeting the due date. Certain items, e.g., reserve, media, special permission items are short-term loans with different late fees. A courtesy overdue reminder will be sent. Failure to receive an overdue reminder, for whatever reason, does not remove the responsibility of the borrower for meeting each due date.

Returning Library Materials

Materials may be returned to any ASU Libraries location, regardless of which library they were checked out from. Each library has an interior book return (or "book drop") located near the circulation/check out desk, and there are also several exterior book returns that are available 24/7. Please use the exterior book returns for print items only in order to prevent severe heat damage to multimedia materials (DVD, VHS, etc. Exterior book return locations:

Overdues

For each regular item not returned or renewed within thirty (30) days of the due date, the library account will be blocked from check out, renewing the items online and/or requesting online, but there will be no money owed. Items can be renewed by bringing them to any Circulation Desk or calling Phone Renewal at (480) 965-2595. No fee will be assessed until the 61st day (students and staff) or the 91st day (faculty) after the due date. After that time a $10 non-refundable billing transaction fee and a replacement charge will be assessed. Only the replacement charge is cancelled when the item is returned. Once the fee has been paid, the item may be renewed.

Recalls

Items that are checked out may be requested by other borrowers at any time. All items are subject to recall. Due to the strict enforcement of the recall process, failure to receive a recall notice does not absolve borrower from knowing an item is recalled. It is important for all borrowers to regularly review the status of their library account, checking for recalls either online or by contacting circulation. Library notices generated by the Libraries’ online system will be sent to you by email, unless you contact a Library Circulation Desk and opt to have a printed notice. Borrowers should select the best method (print or email) for receiving notices, appropriately manage their email accounts and SPAM software, and/or keep mailing addresses valid, including checking departments if on payroll. If there are other requests at the time of checkout, no notice is generated and the borrower is given an automatic 14-day, "no renewal, no fine free period" checkout. This recall policy applies all year long: breaks, sabbaticals, vacations, etc. Recall of an item may shorten the original loan period. Items not returned by midnight on the recall due date are billed the replacement cost and a $10.00 fee per item. Recall late fees are strictly enforced and only the replacement cost is cancelled when the item is returned. If the library is closed, use the 24-hour bookdrop.

Renewals

Items may be renewed as often as necessary, unless recalled by another borrower. Renewals may be done at any ASU Library by bringing the items to Circulation. Renewals may also be processed over the phone (480-965-2595) or over the Web by clicking on MY LIBRARY ACCOUNT and viewing your record. Phone renewal will not inform you of your new due date(s). You can view your own circulation account online or you may call 480-965-3605 to confirm phone renewals. Renewable Law Library items may be renewed two (2) times. Community Card borrowers may make up to two (2) renewals for each item. Certain items, e.g., reserve, media, microforms are not renewable. Refer to the Renewal Policy for more information.

Abuse of Library Privileges

The library will suspend library privileges and block the account of student, staff or faculty borrowers who fail to adhere to library policies or who owe money. Failure to return library materials and pay overdue fees may result in further collection procedures, including the possibility of action by a Collection Agency.

If you believe an item charged to your account has been returned, please contact the owning library. Once a week for three weeks, three independent and thorough searches are conducted for an item a patron claims to have returned. Upon completion, a postcard search record will be sent to the patron with the outcome. Patrons are responsible for any material not found and for any late fees if items are not returned properly to a library circulation desk or bookdrop before the billing date.

Important Reminders

  • You are responsible for items checked-out on your ID and any fees incurred; this responsibility cannot be transferred. For your protection, do not loan your ID or borrowed items to others. Also, do not depend on others to return items for you.

  • You must report a lost ID to the library.

  • Library notices will be sent to your ASU Email address unless you have made other arrangements with the library.
  •

  • You are responsible for keeping your email and mailing address current with the library.

  • Certain library departments and library branches have individual loan and fee policies for various types of materials. Ask for this information when you use other library departments.

  • Items must be returned at an ASU library book return or Circulation Desk in order to be properly checked-in. Most items may be returned to or renewed at any library. When the library is closed, use the 24-hour bookdrop (certain items such as Reserve and Media items cannot be returned through the 24 hour bookdrop).

Community Cards

The ASU Libraries are open to all users. An individual not affiliated with ASU, through current enrollment or employment, who is an Arizona resident and meets certain age requirements (proof of residency and age required), may borrow library items by purchasing a Community Card. The card must be applied for and renewed in person. There is an annual fee of $100.00. Borrowing privileges are not transferable. See Community Card Loan policy for more details.
