Access from PC

From an IT Computing Site or Classroom

Following are instructions for access to an Instructor Volume from a PC in an IT computing site or classroom.

Note: The following assumes you have logged on and the Windows desktop is showing.

Most IVs have shortcut icons in the Start | Instructor Volumes or from Start | All Programs | Instructor Volumes; navigate either of these.

  1. Double-click on the icon for the Instructor Volume you want to access.
  2. Enter your ASURITE UserID and password when prompted, and then click OK.

    Login screen

  3. A U: Drive icon will appear on the desktop. Double-click this icon to open the Instructor Volume.

For those Instructor Volumes that don't have shortcuts, follow these steps:

  1. Open Start | Instructor Volumes or from Start | All Programs | Instructor Volumes, then double-click on the IVmount icon.
  2. Enter the Instructor Volume name when prompted, then press the Enter key.

Screen capture of Mount Instructor Volume dialog

  3. Enter your ASURITE UserID and password when prompted, then click OK.

  4. A U: Drive icon will appear on the desktop. Double-click this icon to open the Instructor Volume.

Note: Students must verify the name of Instructor Volume with their instructor.

From outside an IT Computing Site

Following are instructions for access to an Instructor Volume from a PC outside an IT computing site.

To access files on an IV from outside the sites, use of the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is required. To obtain an SFTP client (that is, the software which allows use of this protocol) and for instruction in its use, see www.asu.edu/ssh.

  1. SFTP to the ASU General purpose server (general.asu.edu).
  2. Log on to the ASU General purpose server using your ASURITE UserID and password.
  3. After getting in, you'll need to change directory to the Instructor Volume space. The path is /afs/asu.edu/class/x/y/z/xyz123 where xyz123 is the name of the Instructor Volume you want to access. See the documentation or online help of your SFTP program regarding how to change directories.
  4. Proceed with the SFTPing (copying) of file(s).

Note: Be sure to use the ASCII transfer mode for plain text files and binary for all other files.
