Employment Financial Aid and Scholarships
F-1 students
A. On-campus work
- Up to 20 hours/week during the regular semester, 40 hours/week during the breaks. May not work beyond completion date and must be in status.
- May not interfere with full-time study.
- Eligible for hourly jobs and research/teaching assistantships.

B. Off-campus work
- Optional Practical Training OPT – Employment authorization benefit for F-1 students to gain practical experience in their field of study by working off campus for a total of twelve months. OPT can be obtained while school is in session, after completion of a degree program, and during the summer.
- Curricular Practical Training CPT – Employment authorization benefit for F-1 students whose degree program requires completion of internship credits.
Important eligibility criteria for OPT and CPT:
Maintenance of F-1 status for a minimum of 1 academic year in current degree program.
For complete off-campus work eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT), visit International Student Office (ISO) at the Tempe campus.
J-1 students
- Must secure permission from their J Program sponsor to engage in any employment.
- ASU sponsored students must see ISO for work authorization issues.
