ASU CSW/SC 2013 Professional Development Conference

Tempe Campus: Thursday, October 3, 2013

The CSW/SC Professional Development Conference at the Tempe Campus will take place in the Memorial Union. The Conference Reception & Resource Fair will take place in MU Turquoise

Workshops will run from 8:30AM-3:30PM.

Check-in for the conference will begin at 8:00AM and will run through 2:00PM. Check-in from 8:00AM to 10:00AM will take place MU Turquoise. Check-in from 10:00AM-2:00PM will take place outside of MU Alumni and MU Gold. Once you check-in, you are checked-in for the rest of the day. If you are attending an 8:30AM or 9:45AM session, you are encouraged to arrive early for check-in. We are expecting a large crowd at Tempe.

Conference workshops and the conference reception/resource fair is open to all current ASU faculty, staff, and students -- and is completely free of charge.

Per SPP 601, supervisors and employees are encouraged to work together to identify reasonable work modifications to allow the employee to attend conference workshops, without negatively impacting service.

Registration is required for each conference workshop/event that you would like to attend. You must submit a registration for each workshop/event.

Sustainability: Zero Waste

Arizona State University is going Zero Waste. Over the next few years, the University will work to ensure that over 90% of the "waste" materials leaving campus never reach the landfill. As an education institution with over 85,000 community members generating waste on the Tempe Campus alone, this is no simple task. The process to achieve Zero Waste at an institution this size requires in-depth strategy development, analysis, and operational implementation. For the past few years, sustainability staff have been doing just that. This talk will highlight our RoadMap to Zero Waste and investigate strategies for continued development into the future. Zero Waste, It's not trash anymore.

Harassment is a specific form of discrimination. It is unwelcome behavior, based on a protected status, which is sufficiently severe or pervasive to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment for academic pursuits, employment, or participation in university-sponsored programs or activities.  This “interactive” session will provide you with scenarios of “harassing type behavior” and an opportunity to dialogue.  Workplace Conduct is an action that occurs every day within an organization, good or bad.  We will have an exciting discussion regarding various types of conduct related behavior which can create a “great working environment”, as well as conduct which could potentially create a “hostile working environment”.  Want suggestions?  Want to share? Office of Equity & Inclusion Presents: What is ADA? Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodation, communications, and governmental activities.  This session will focus on defining ADA in employment and educating participants on how ADA pertains to our outreach efforts, recruitment, work accommodation, etc. In general, the employment provisions of the ADA require (a) equal opportunity in selecting, testing, and hiring qualified applicants with disabilities; (b) job accommodation for applicants and employees with disabilities when such accommodations would not impose "undue hardship”; (c) equal opportunity in promotion and benefits. Although interactive, this session will not focus on ASU’s internal processing of ADA accommodation requests, rather the overall federal requirements.

Networking is an important part of career development, and with that in mind the CSW and the Staff Council invite you to join us for the conference lunch break – which will feature both a reception and a resource fair.  This is a great opportunity to meet with fellow conference attendees.  During the reception, you will also have the opportunity to visit with a wide variety of organizations and vendors as part of the conference resource fair. There will be lots of great giveaways.   It promises to be a great event!
