Presenter: Margot Monroe, SR HR Consultant
Margot was born and raised in New Jersey and considers herself to be a NJ ‘transplant.’ At an early age she decided to leave the cold conditions of the east coast and travel to where there was ‘heat and sunshine’ all the time. She has lived and worked most of her adult life in Silicon Valley, California.
She received her associate and undergraduate degrees from Essex County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology, respectively. Soon after graduation she realized her childhood dream and moved to Silicon Valley where she pursued a dual Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organizational Development from the private University of San Francisco.
Margot has spent the majority of her work experience in private industries where she worked for a few notable Silicon Valley companies such as: Apple Computer, Sun Microsystems, and Siliconix, in addition to several dot.coms (i.e., One Page, audiohighway, and SoftNet/Intellicom). In addition to working in private industry she started a successful human resources consulting business.
Margot came to ASU in 2005 from San Diego where she worked as Division HR Manager for Jenny Craig, International (West Coast and Canada). She enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, cooking, and home decorating (for herself and friends).
Since e-mail is one of the most utilized forms of communication in the workplace, it is essential that one’s e-mails are clear, effective, and appropriate. This workshop will highlight some of the common mistakes in e-mail writing and will cover strategies for making your e-mails more professional and more effective. Some of the topics that will be covered include etiquette, tone, writing, organization, and concerns about using e-mail for certain types of information.
This interactive workshop will provide tools for how to manage the daily stressors of our lives. Dr. Aaron Krasnow will focus on useful, proven, and easy to learn techniques to lessen the impact of stress, improve our relationships, and be more effective at work. At the end of the workshop participants will take with them strategies to apply at work and home, and will have gained the knowledge necessary to teach the ideas to others.
Presenter: Dr. Aaron Krasnow, Associate Director of Counseling & Consultation:
Dr. Aaron Krasnow is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Associate Director of Counseling and Consultation at Arizona State University. Dr. Krasnow has presented locally and nationally on a variety of topics, including stress and coping, relaxation, improving relationships, sport and performance psychology, and organizational and team development. He received his Doctoral degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and has worked at ASU for 6 years.
Workplace communication is challenging. Dependence on colleagues to accomplish tasks, power inequalities, and the sometime pressure to be “family,” work together to create a complex environment. The workplace communication workshop will focus on overcoming these potential obstacles through the use of supportive and respectful communication and “smart” conflict strategies.
Presenter: Dr. Douglas Kelley, Professor, Social & Behavioral Sciences
Douglas Kelley received his Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of Arizona. He spent five years at Seattle Pacific University before settling in at the west campus of Arizona State University. Doug teaches relationship-based courses such as Family Communication, Conflict and Negotiation, Relational Communication, and Inner-City Families. Professor Kelley studies interpersonal communication processes. Most of this research has focused on marital communication, including how couples negotiate privacy and relational expectations. His 1998 study on The Communication of Forgiveness launched a decades worth of work with colleague, Vince Waldron, focusing on various forgiveness processes. Dr. Kelley considers teaching a primary focus of his work at ASU. As such, he has been nominated for various teaching awards and takes great pride in the creation of a service- learning course in which students work with children and youth in inner-city contexts. In addition, he puts in numerous hours each week as faculty advisor to the college Young Life club on campus. He has served on the editorial boards of various journals including, most currently, the Journal of Family Communication. Doug loves to spend time with his wife, Ann, and sons, Jonathan and Daniel. He enjoys kayaking and swimming, and running with his beagle/lab, Allen.
This workshop will focus on strategies that all ASU employees can use to be more “green” in the work place. Discussion topics will include among others, strategies for reducing energy consumption and resources
