Polytechnic Campus

The CSW/USC Professional Development Conference at the Polytechnic Campus will take place in the Student Union Cooley Ballroom A. Workshops will run from 10:00AM-2:00PM, with one additional workshop session available on October 22nd.

The conference is open to all ASU faculty, staff, and students -- and is completely free of charge. Seating is limited, so register today!

Financial Survival: Strategies for Surviving the Recession

 With the stress of the current financial recession, it is important to be proactive with your personal finances.  This workshop will provide timely strategies for surviving the recession. Some of the topics that will be covered include, among others, how to create a crisis budget, how to negotiate with creditors, strategies for credit repair, issues with foreclosure, strategies for how to live on less and the benefits taking control of one’s finances.

 

Lessons in Goal Setting: What Do You Really, Really Want?

Anyone who wants to learn a fresh way of defining and attaining their goals will enjoy this interactive and engaging seminar, where you’ll have a chance to answer the questions: “what do I really, really want?” and “what holds me back?” Dr. McKay will teach you the secret to using creativity and flow to guide your goals, and will show you how your emotions and thoughts can either slow you down or propel you toward your dreams. She will coach you on a simple method for envisioning and moving toward what you really, really want.

Presenter: Dr. Robyne McKay, Student Counseling Services
Dr. McKay holds a doctorate is in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas. For the past 10 years, she has been researching creativity, career psychology, and optimal development. She is writing two co-authored upcoming books: “Smart Girls: Milestones and Danger Zones” and “Creating Grace: Extraordinary People in an Ordinary World”. Sustainability: Growing a Successful Garden

This is a practical workshop on preparing, planting and sustaining an organic garden in the Phoenix valley. Speaker Farryl Bertmann will discuss plant selection, pest and weed control, garden placement and how to create a raised bed garden with no-till and low maintenance.

 Presenter: Farryl Bertmann
Farryl Bertmann is an instructional specialist at Arizona State University. She recently completed a Master of Science in Applied Biological Sciences with a concentration in Urban Horticulture. She has instructed Southwest Home Gardening for ASU as well as the practical laboratories for Fundamentals of Urban Horticulture and Plant Propagation. Farryl has also completed a Master in Arts in German where she investigated ecological aspects of former East German literature. In her free-time she enjoys the joys and the challenges of organic vegetable gardening in the Phoenix valley.

 

Stress Management: Breathe -- The Mindful Experience -- October 22nd

Dr. Joel Hutchinson will teach attendees about mindfulness as a form of stress management.  Attendees will engage in a variety of exercises to learn how to employ mindfulness strategies in their daily living.

Dr. Joel Hutchinson is a licensed psychologist and is the Director of Student Counseling Services on the ASU Polytechnic campus.  Dr. Hutchinson has over twenty years of clinical experience and provides individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to students on the Poly campus. His interest in mindfulness grew out of his desire to provide the students he works with stress management tools and has been deepened by his personal practice of yoga.
