The CSW/USC Professional Development Conference at the Downtown Campus will take place in the Information Commons Classroom located in the UCENT building. Workshops will run from 9:00AM-3:00PM, with check-in beginnning at 8:30AM. See the conference schedule below.

Per SPP 601, supervisors and employees are encouraged to work together to identify reasonable work modifications to allow the employee to attend conference workshops, without negatively impacting service.
Since e-mail is one of the most utilized forms of communication in the workplace, it is essential that one’s e-mails are clear, effective, and appropriate. This workshop will highlight some of the common mistakes in e-mail writing and will cover strategies for making your e-mails more professional and more effective. Some of the topics that will be covered include etiquette, tone, writing, organization, and concerns about using e-mail for certain types of information.
Presenter: Dr. Julianne White
Julianne White received her Ph.D. in English literature from the University of New Mexico in 2002. She wrote her dissertation on the poetry of the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, and her three areas of specialty were Rhetoric-Composition and Victorian and Modern British Literatures. She is now a Writing Programs Instructor at Arizona State University in the English Department, where she teaches composition, business writing, and sophomore level English survey classes. She also teaches part-time for ASU-Polytechnic during the summer, where she enjoys teaching film, literature, grammar, and writing classes at all levels.
This workshop will focus on strategies that all ASU employees can use to be more “green” in the work place. Discussion topics will include among others, strategies for reducing energy consumption and resources
Presenter: Betty Lombardo
Betty Lombardo is a Program Coordinator within the office of University Sustainability Practices. For the past year she has been involved with the development of several campus sustainability initiatives to include; the greening of our Homecoming events, the submission of our green house gas inventory and our carbon neutrality plan, the Sustainability Toolbox, and the environmental indicator data management system. Betty is currently involved with bringing a Farmer’s Market onto campus and developing a Campus Living Laboratory Campus Project’s website that will connect faculty, staff and students together to promote the adoption of sustainable practices across the university.
The University Sustainability Practices group is housed within the Global Institute of Sustainability. The University Sustainability Practices group’s four goals are; Carbon Neutrality, Zero Waste, Active Community Engagement, and Principled Practice.
Working for a government or state institution, requires heightened attention to legal issues in the workplace, particularly around the issue of “public records.” In this workshop, Jodi Preudhomme, ASU’s Associate General Counsel will present a basic legal review of important legal issues and considerations that state employees should be aware of. Particular attention will be paid to public records and e-mail communication.

Prior to joining the Office of General Counsel, Jodi was with the Department of Defense, Defense Contract Management Agency. For six years prior to that, she focused her practice on employment law while serving as an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Arizona Attorney General and as a Deputy Maricopa County Attorney. Jodi graduated from St. Mary's University School of Law (J.D. 1997) and Arizona State University (B.S. 1994). She is admitted to practice in Arizona and Texas, the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
OHR’s “Workplace Excellence” interactive workshop will cover a range of topics and strategies geared to promote excellence in the workplace. Discussion will include, among others, ASU Values, workplace ethics, professionalism, customer service, and individual accountability.
Presenter: Margot Monroe:
Margot was born and raised in New Jersey and considers herself to be a NJ ‘transplant.’ At an early age she decided to leave the cold conditions of the east coast and travel to where there was ‘heat and sunshine’ all the time. She has lived and worked most of her adult life in Silicon Valley, California.
She received her associate and undergraduate degrees from Essex County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology, respectively. Soon after graduation she realized her childhood dream and moved to Silicon Valley where she pursued a dual Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organizational Development from the private University of San Francisco.
Margot has spent the majority of her work experience in private industries where she worked for a few notable Silicon Valley companies such as: Apple Computer, Sun Microsystems, and Siliconix, in addition to several dot.coms (i.e., One Page, audiohighway, and SoftNet/Intellicom). In addition to working in private industry she started a successful human resources consulting business.
Margot came to ASU in 2005 from San Diego where she worked as Division HR Manager for Jenny Craig, International (West Coast and Canada). She enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, cooking, and home decorating (for herself and friends).
Dr. Joel Hutchinson will teach attendees about mindfulness as a form of stress management. Attendees will engage in a variety of exercises to learn how to employ mindfulness strategies in their daily living.

Dr. Joel Hutchinson is a licensed psychologist and is the Director of Student Counseling Services on the ASU Polytechnic campus. Dr. Hutchinson has over twenty years of clinical experience and provides individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to students on the Poly campus. His interest in mindfulness grew out of his desire to provide the students he works with stress management tools and has been deepened by his personal practice of yoga.
