Project 1 Grafitti Project
Objectives

Technical: Explore and experiment with the potential of the mark and line as forms of powerful expression.

Conceptual: Design an image that tells the viewer something about your personality.

Aesthetics: Create dynamic surfaces and spaces for the interaction of marks and lines.

Project Overview Use any type of mark making device to create an image or "tag" that is a reflection of your personality. Use a variety of mark making tools that are traditional and non-traditional. The image itself should reflect your personality and something about yourself such as:where you are from, personal beliefs or convictions, culture and or concerns. Experiment and have fun! There should be evidence of experimenting with all mark making possibilities with each tool employed.
References for further study  Look at art made by Neo-Expressionist artists. A few examples are Jean-Michel Basquiat and Mark Tobey. Alos look at early Cy Twombley and Mark Rothko.
Vocabulary line, phsycic line, implied line, actual line, curvilinear, rectilinear, grafitti, horizontal line, gesture, diagonal line, contour, vertical line, and shape.
Materials Mark making tools such as pencils, charcoal, chalk, lipstick, ink, markers, pastels or anything else that makes a mark. Any surface that is a minimum of 10"x14" is acceptable. Be creative!
Critique Ideas



Here are some sample questions to use in a critique.

 

1. Can you describe this work using at least 3 vocabulary words from this unit?

2. What is the initial "feeling" or emotional response you get when first viewing this work?

3. Can you get a sense of the artist pesonality from the work?

4. What element in this image was the most successful that should be carried to the next project?

5. what elemnt in this image is the least successful that needs more attention?
