3 ways the Alumni Association puts you at the top of the class
It’s graduation time – which means it’s time to show off your smarts! If you are a member of the ASU Alumni Association, here are three ways in which you can show you’ve earned “extra credit” with Sparky!

  1. Life members and Gold Devil Life members get first dibs on tickets to the Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate at the Sept. 26 ASU-Georgia game in Athens!
  2. Members around the country are encouraging the next generation of Sun Devils by hosting Sun Devil Send-Offs in their hometowns for incoming ASU freshmen and their families.
  3. Alumni Association members can join the jet set and travel to exciting destinations such as Machu Picchu in Peru and Spain as part of the association’s premiere travel program, Sun Devil Destinations.

 

Commencement 2.0!
No matter how far away you’ve moved from your Sun Devil home, you can be a part of ASU’s history-making 2009 Spring Commencement on May 13! Watch the ceremonies live or on-demand via a webcast, and communicate with other alums as the ceremony takes place via Twitter and Facebook!

Membership appreciation mixer promotes career success
Next month, the ASU Alumni Association would like to say thank you to its members by picking up the tab at the June 16 Maroon and Gold Professionals Network mixer! Dues-paying members of the Alumni Association receive complimentary admission to the event, which will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the University Club, 425 E. University on ASU’s Tempe campus.

Boost your career with “Transition Take-Off” event
Career Launch: Transition Take-off is an all-day professional development seminar designed specifically for recent grads. The event will be held at ASU's SkySong Innovation Center in Scottsdale, 1475 N. Scottsdale Road.

Highlights include workshops led by industry professionals, a keynote lunch presentation on creating a professional presence and a networking mixer involving employers, recruiters, alumni, and registered participants.

The event costs $99 to attend.

Sun Devil Send-Offs unite new ASU students with local alums
ASU alumni chapters all over the country are hosting Sun Devil Send-Offs, which provide incoming freshmen and their families with a warm welcome and words of advice from Sun Devil alums. The events will begin in late June and run through early August; alumni volunteer participation is vital to making the Send-Offs successful.

Sun Devil kids can become Petroglyph Pathfinders at rock art summer camp
The Deer Valley Rock Art Center, a program of ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, is pleased to host another season of our popular summer camp, Petroglyph Pathfinders. These one-week camps for children ages 8-11 feature hands-on educational activities, crafts, storytelling, games, hikes and much more at a real archaeology site!

Georgia tailgate tickets now available to Life and Gold Devil Life members!
The Sun Devil football team is going down to Georgia Sept. 26 to play the University of Georgia Bulldogs, and the ASU Alumni Association is hosting a pre-game tailgate that is just one part of an away-game weekend filled with fun, festivities and Southern hospitality.

Life and Gold Devil Life members of the ASU Alumni Association are now eligible to order tickets to this event, which promises to be one for the ages.

Outstanding faculty members named Regents’ Professors
Five exceptional ASU professors at the top of their careers have been named as ASU Regents’ Professors for 2009 by President Michael Crow and Elizabeth D. Capaldi, executive vice president and provost. Their selection was ratified by the Arizona Board of Regents on May 1.
Winners include luminaries in law, engineering, biosciences

 

University energizes West campus with large solar project
Arizona State University has begun an ambitious project to install 3.3 megawatts of renewable energy capacity via solar cells on its West campus. The project primarily will utilize open space on the campus and will meet nearly all of its energy needs.

Business journalism association moving to Cronkite school
The Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the world’s leading association of financial journalists with 3,300 members, is moving its national headquarters to Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix.

Public policy institute welcomes Clark-Johnson
Sue Clark-Johnson, former president of the newspaper division of Gannett Co. Inc., has been appointed as executive director of ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

Clark-Johnson, a longtime Arizona businesswoman, executive and leader, replaces former Morrison director Rob Melnick, who left the position to become executive dean of ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability.
“Her knowledge of Arizona issues … will be of great value”


 

Cronkite alumna wins Pulitzer Prize
Julie Cart, a 1980 journalism graduate of Arizona State University and member of the Cronkite School Alumni Hall of Fame, recently won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for a powerful Los Angeles Times series on fighting wildfires.

ASU’s Turner Thorne to coach for USA Basketball
USA Basketball announced on April 30 that ASU women’s basketball Head Coach Charli Turner Thorne will be the head coach of the 2009 Women’s World University Games Team that will compete this July in Belgrade, Serbia.
