ASU CARES, the university’s largest annual volunteer community service project, is extending its reach this year through participation of alumni chapters around the country. Here is a sampling of alumni groups who will be participating in ASU CARES Day on Saturday, March 21:

Run alongside Pat Tillman this April
Want to honor the spirit of the late ASU football star Pat Tillman? ASU alumni are hosting 4.2-mile “shadow runs” in Austin, Chicago, Colorado, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and San Diego in April to coincide with the official runs in Tempe (April 18) and San Jose (April 25).

History professor wins Glendale MLK award
Matthew Whitaker, associate professor of history in ASU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, recently received the Promoting Inclusiveness Award presented by the city of Glendale at its Jan. 16 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day Luncheon.

Army continues Flexible Display Center support
ASU announced Jan. 29 that the U.S. Army has committed to sponsor an additional five years of research and development at ASU’s Flexible Display Center. The five-year renewal, agreed upon in 2008, is for $50 million.

Snyder to receive Altieri Lifetime Achievement Coaching Award
Bruce Snyder, who coached Arizona State University football for nine seasons (1992-2000), is the 2009 recipient of the Pete Altieri “Lifetime Achievement” Coaching Award, presented annually by the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
