NOTES FROM THE ASUAA PRESIDENT
Commencement 2009 with President Barack Obama was a historical moment! I hope you were able to attend and/or view the highlights of the commencement. If you haven’t had the opportunity, you can do so by clicking here.
Now it is time to shift to the summer months! We had a good opportunity to catch up with chapter liaisons during the CAC call last week. First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you for hosting and/or supporting the Sun Devil Send-Offs this summer. We have a record 28 throughout the country and I am sure the new students and their families appreciate the outreach. Second, let’s give a big hurrah to the women’s golf team’s national championship, the women’s softball team that made it to the college world series and now the baseball team on their way to Omaha. If you are there this Sunday, come by the pavilion tent near the stadium itself as Eddie DeVall and I will be hosting an ASU Alumni hospitality table for all Sun Devil alums and fans.
All the best as always,

NOTES FROM THE ASUAA ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS AND CONSTITUENT RELATIONS
Thank you for participating in the CAC call Monday evening. We had 23 representatives from 20 Geographic and Special Interest Chapters, Clubs and connections. I had the opportunity to announce and welcome the following groups to our Sun Devil Family:
- Dallas Connection, Corey Small, Coordinator, cwsmall@aol.com
- START (Student Admissions Relations Team), Tim Satterstrom, Coordinator, tsatters@asu.edu
Please feel free to spread the word and extend a welcome to Corey and Tim.
The Sun Devil Send-Off season is here and I want to thank the chapters for coordinating all the details. This is a very special event that welcomes new students and their families and also engages alumni. This is a fabulous event for the students, the parents and the alumni. It truly is a win, win, win event! Last year, we welcomed more than 200 new students and engaged 100 alumni through the coordination of 21 Send-Offs. This summer, we are increasing the number of Send-Offs to 28 and hope to also increase the alumni and student engagement. We added nine new locations!
Speaking of wins: it is an exciting time for ASU Baseball. It is great to see so many viewing parties scheduled for Sunday. Cheer loud! Wear Gold!
If you haven’t seen it already, check out our ASUAA recruitment video that was premiered at Commencement 2009 with President Obama. Many of our chapters are featured in the video, click here to view.
Go Devils!

GOLDEN REUNION - CLASS OF 1959
On May 13 and 14 seventy-two classmates returned to their alma mater and celebrated their 50th reunion! This was a landmark Golden Reunion for many reasons: a record number of alumni returned for their reunion, the class of 1959 was the first class to have graduation in Sun Devil Stadium, they returned to SDS and were privileged to hear President Obama address over 70,000 guests, and they were the first class to have “University” on their diploma (“ASU” was “Arizona State College” until 1958). The class enjoyed two days of revisiting campus, sharing memories, reigniting friendships, and making new friends. And most importantly, they learned how to give the “pitch fork”. This iconic hand gesture symbolizes Sun Devil pride and unity, however, it was not integrated into ASU until recently. They enjoyed their “pitch fork” lesson by Bill Kennedy, Associate Athletic Director, and were proud to show it off in the class photo.

The Alumni Association is selling game and tailgate tickets and the Sun Devil Club is offering travel packages that include game ticket, tailgate ticket, host hotel, and ground transportation. MEDALLION SCHOLARS PROGRAM UPDATE
The Medallion Scholarship Program continues its growth and development, having completed its third year under the revamped structure of the former “Medallion of Merit” Scholarship. Through student interaction, group community service projects, and ASUAA staff and alumni support, this signature scholarship of the ASU Alumni Association supports students and concentrates on their success both in and out of the classroom. In April, the group recently welcomed 27 new scholars who will begin at ASU in the fall and is now comprised of 88 scholars as a whole, ranging from seniors to freshmen. ASU alumni have the unique opportunity to support and interact with this amazing group of students by serving as a Medallion Ambassador. Ambassadors can serve as guest speakers, accompany a scholar to an ASU event, or host them for workshops or simple social gatherings. If you would like more information on becoming a Medallion Ambassador, please contact Greg Mena at 480.965.4078 or Greg.Mena@asu.edu. |
STUDENT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (SAA) UPDATE
The Student Alumni Association (SAA) has concluded another successful year. This spirit and tradition keeping student organization responsible for upholding ASU traditions like Whitewashing the A, Lantern Walk, and Oozeball helps current ASU students to bleed maroon and gold and connects them with fellow spirited Sun Devils. SAA has experienced tremendous growth over the past year and looks forward to engaging over 900 new members in the fall. Thank you to all the chapter leaders in Chicago, Los Angeles & Philadelphia who led the SAA recruitment efforts at the recent Out-of-State Orientations. We brought in close to 100 new SAA members at these programs thanks to the Sun Devil Spirit displayed by our alumni leaders!
If you would like to support SAA and the ASU traditions associated with it, sponsorship opportunities are available and can be tailored to fit within your means. For more information, please contact Greg Mena at 480.965.4078 or Greg.Mena@asu.edu.

ASU BASEBALL TEAM HEADS TO THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
Behind a complete game gem from Josh Spence, the Arizona State University baseball team advanced to the 2009 College World Series with an 8-2 win over Clemson on Sunday to win the Tempe Super Regional. A second straight above-capacity crowd of 4,406 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils improve to 49-12 on the season with the victory. The win puts ASU in the College World Series for the 21st time in school history and the third time in the last five seasons. The Devils will face North Carolina in the opening game of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. on June 14. For the complete story, click here. Also visit www.thesundevils.com.
FIND YOUR OWN PLACE ON THE RED PLANET
Arizona State University researchers and scientists have created two new features for Google Earth 5.0, the popular online application that lets users tour Earth, the starry sky, and the Red Planet Mars. The first of the new features lets anyone, anywhere, recommend places on Mars to photograph with ASU's THEMIS camera on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter. The second new feature shows the most recent infrared images of Mars sent back to Earth from the THEMIS camera. THEMIS is the Thermal Emission Imaging System, a multiband infrared and visual camera designed at ASU by Dr. Philip Christensen.
To suggest a place for THEMIS to photograph, viewers need two things: Google Earth 5.0 and a file that is updated each week giving the spacecraft's Mars orbital groundtrack. Google Earth 5.0 is available at http://earth.google.com. To get the orbital track, users should go to http://suggest.mars.asu.edu and follow the simple steps to register. Registering takes users to a page to download each week's orbital track file and it also lets them make image suggestions without having to enter an e-mail address with each image suggestion.
