NOTES FROM THE ASUAA PRESIDENT
We are off and running on our Send-offs with 13 of them to occur all across the Nation this weekend alone!  Thank you to those who have hosted and/or assisted  with these events, as we could not do it without your help and they definitely complete an important year of transition for future Sun Devils and their families. We hope you are preparing for  an eventful fall semester with your own chapters and also being involved in alumni traditions such as football tailgates (and we will be hosting them at the Georgia, Stanford and UCLA games this year as well as welcoming everyone back for Homecoming which is set for October 31.  The undergraduate students are going to be “dressing up”, the university is considering the “Challenges theme” and your own Alumni Association will include as part of its festivities—an official Maroon and Gold Pumpkin Patch.  Also, we are busy building upon the inaugural year of the Senior Year Experience programs and adding in several more events and programs to connect with our senior classes before they leave University.  Have a great summer wherever you are and we look forward to seeing you back at Homecoming for the Fall Leadership Forum.

All the best as always,

NOTES FROM THE ASUAA ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS AND CONSTITUENT RELATIONS
Send-Off season is here!  The first two send-offs were very successful!  Trish and I went to Tucson and it was a great event that attracted 45 Sun Devils including students, their families and alumni.  The students and their families greatly appreciated the information and I know from various comments from the alumni, that they had a great time sharing ASU stories and connecting with each other.  Nicole traveled to Denver which had approximately 30 Sun Devils including students, families and alumni.  A special thank you to the hosts, as well as our chapters, as we could not do this without you!  You can click HERE to enjoy the photos.  We have more Send-Offs scheduled throughout the next few weeks and we are looking forward to hearing the success stories!

Go Devils!

sendoff.jpgSUN DEVIL SEND-OFFS
We’ve started the Send-Off season with six fantastic events in Denver, Tucson, San Francisco, D.C., Twin Cities and Portland! July will be filled with Send-Off FUN! Thank you again to everyone who has worked so hard on planning your local Send-Offs, we appreciate it so much!  Just a few important reminders as you prepare for your Send-Off:

Phone Calls to Students – If you’re able to have local alumni make some phone calls to the students to invite them to attend, please try to make the calls at least one week prior to the Send-Off. Encourage the students to sign-up online, but also send Trish the names of students who have said they will attend. This will help to keep the RSVP numbers accurate and we will make sure everyone who is interested receives the final details for the event to ensure a greater attendance. This will also help us to include the correct number of supplies when we send your spirit kits.

Sign-in Sheets – There will be 3 sign-in sheets at every Send-Off; one for students, one for parents and one for alumni. Please make sure EVERYONE signs in and then send the Sign-In sheets back to Trish in the envelope provided in your spirit kit packet. This information is very important for our continued correspondence with the attendees and future outreach efforts.

Photos – Please take lots of photos, candids and a group photo of the students. We’ll post the pictures on our website and share them with everyone who attended and use them in future promotions.

No Alcohol – Just a reminder that alcohol should not be served at Sun Devil Send-Offs. If you are holding the event at a local establishment where alumni often gather for game-watchings or mixers, please use proper judgment when socializing with new students and their families, to avoid any uncomfortable or inappropriate situations.

If you have any questions about the Sun Devil Send-Offs program, please contact Trish Thiele-Keating – trish.thiele-keating@asu.edu.

BEGINNING OF A NEW FISCAL YEAR - IMPORTANT UPDATES IN THE ONLINE TOOLKIT
Be sure to check the Online Toolkit as you begin preparations for your next event. The Program Report Form and the Check Request Form have been updated for FY10. Please use these new forms when you are requesting to utilize funds for your programs. All requests for reimbursement must be received within 45 days of the event, accompanied by ITEMIZED receipts.

UPDATED POLICY FOR USING ALLOCATED & HOLDING FUNDS
Please review the newly approved Guidelines for Allocated Funds which can be found in the Online Toolkit. Please note that ALL requests to utilize allocated & holding funds must be requested to ASUAA BEFORE the purchase has been made. Contact your Chapter Liaison to receive approval for the use of funds before placing any orders or purchasing any items for the chapter or for a program/event. Your Liaison will let you know if your request has been approved.  All requests to utilize funds must be received within 45 days of the event, accompanied by ITEMIZED invoice/receipt & Program Report.

HAVING AN EVENT?
Be sure to find out who was there! Use the Event Sign-In sheet from the Online Toolkit for your next event. Collecting information from event attendees can be helpful when it comes time to follow-up with a ‘thank you’ for attending and inviting them to future events. You should also send the information back to ASUAA so we can keep our alumni database up-to-date with current contact information.

PENNIES FOR POINTS
Football season is around the corner & scholarship fundraising has never been so exciting! If your chapter, club or connection would like to participate in PFP, contact Trish before August 15th (that’s only a month away!) to set up an online registration page, pledge form and a scholarship account with the ASU Foundation if you don’t already have one. What’s PFP? Pennies For Points is a creative fundraising program where anyone can pledge money per point scored by the ASU Football team during the fall season. All the funds collected go toward scholarships sponsored by Alumni Chapters. Contact Trish if you’re interested in starting the program for your alumni group.

PROFESSOR PREPARES FOR AMERICA'S RETURN TO THE MOON
By Nikki Staab
The Interdisciplinary A building on the Tempe campus looks rather average from the outside. There isn’t anything that hints at the excitement, talent and innovation hidden behind its nondescript doors, and there is certainly no indication that the first steps of a great journey are taking place inside.  For nearly two years, professor Mark Robinson and his team have called this building home, developing it into a state-of-the-art Science Operations Center (referred to as the SOC) to work in conjunction with their contribution to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The instrument payload of LRO consists of seven scientific instruments from institutions around the nation and globe that will return lunar imagery, topography, temperatures, and more. Robinson is Principal Investigator of one of the instruments on board, the imaging system known as LROC (short for Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera).

”LRO is the ever important first step in America’s human return to the Moon. We have much to learn as we restart exploring our nearest neighbor,” says Robinson. “We are returning to the Moon as humankind’s first step in leaving planet Earth to explore the Solar System. Learning to live and work on the Moon will allow us to build the skills and technologies to take the next steps to Mars, the asteroids, and beyond.”
LRO is the first mission in NASA's Space Exploration policy, a plan to return to the Moon and then to travel to Mars and beyond. Just as a scout finds the safest way for expeditions on Earth, LRO will act as a robotic scout to gather crucial data on the lunar environment that will help astronauts prepare for future lunar expeditions. The LROC imaging system serves the mission’s primary objective of scouting for safe and compelling lunar landing sites.  For the complete story, click here.
