Chapter Service and Scholarship

Pennies for Points
This year, we're bringing back the Pennies for Points program. Over the past years, in an effort to find ways to give back to both the community and the university, the Chapter established a Scholarship Fund whereby the chapter could give scholarship aid to high school students in the greater Washington, D.C. area who choose to attend Arizona State University.  While the chapter has been able to provide nominal awards in the past, we are taking steps to establish an endowment with the ASU Foundation for the purpose of increasing our scholarship giving potential.

Beginning two years ago, we established the Pennies for Points program, where we ask Sun Devil alumni and fans to pledge their pocket change to our chapter's Scholarship Fund. The program is as simple as it sounds.  You can pledge any amount for each point that the ASU football team scores against its opponents this season, or in any individual game.  All donations are tax deductible. We amassed over $3,500 in pledges so far, and this year, we’re setting the bar even higher.

We can accept pledges by mail at the address below and in person at our game watching events held at Crystal City Sports Pub.  We will have pledge forms at the Sports Pub for the game watchings, or you can request one directly from me. You can also make your pledge online by clicking HERE.

Softball Roundup
Well, the season has finally come to an end, and while our record wasn’t great, we had a lot of fun. Despite a 1-13 regular season record, we opened up a huge lead on Kansas in the first round of the end-of season tournament before a freak accident in centerfield took out our starting centerfielder. While the lead was strong enough to carry us into the next round, our thoughts were with a teammate and losses to Villanova and Embry-Riddle brought our season to a close. The word from Jason is that all is ok, but we continue to wish him a speedy and pain free recovery.

CAN Flag Football
We’re four games in, and coming off a bye week, so we should be all set to take down safety-school Yale (“ASU-East”) this weekend. All alumni are welcome to come out and join us this year. The co-ed, non-contact league is comprised of roughly 70 teams from various college alumni associations. Our next game is a Pac-10 matchup v. Stanford this Sunday, and the remaining schedule is below. Our games are played at Anacostia Park, downtown. If you were not on our previous roster, and are interested in joining the team, contact me at robertdeal@gmail.com.

Fall Service Event – CAST for Kids
For the fourth year in a row, the National Capital Chapter will be partnering with other Pac-10 alumni associations in the DC metro area to volunteer at CAST for Kids in Leesylvania State Park, VA on September 19th.  The event partners mentally and physically disabled youth with seasoned bass fishermen for a day of fishing in the park.  For many of the children, this is their first fishing opportunity. Volunteers will be helping out with the day's activities, including acting as buddies for the participants, leading on-shore activities and general setup.  More information on this event to come!  Please feel free to contact Nina Deal for more information.

Capital Scholars and local alumni help prepare meals for the District's homeless and hungry at DC Central Kitchen.
